Charger reliability woes
We’re starting to have enough fast chargers — now we need to ensure they work
I am planning another journey from St John’s to Ontario. In summer instead of winter this time (which will help my range and charging speed) things should go better… but I keep having to adjust my planned route as I look at reports in PlugShare about the actual performance and reliability of the chargers en route. EV owners should not have to rely on reports provided by others to decide whether they can count on the chargers that they plan to use — the charging network owners should be honest about the state of repair and function of their stations!
It’s clear that charging station operators are not treating charger failures seriously enough either — PetroCanada in particular. Of the three fastest (Non-Tesla) chargers in Atlantic Canada, one has been broken since June, and the two others seem frequently to deliver much less speed than promised. Where is the sense of urgency about getting these issues addressed (both from the company and the provinces affected)? This is critical infrastructure for EV owners and continued issues will undermine EV adoption when cars become available…
